Certified Wood Design Awards

Five furniture design awards of $2,000 (US) are being offered by The Collins Companies based in Portland, Oregon. Designs (on slides with supporting text) must be submitted by October 5, 1998 and be made from environmentally certified CollinsWood (tm) or certified hardwood veneered plywood (with the exception of minor upholstery, metal, glass, etc.). Entries must be able to be manufactured in some level of quantity - "one-off" artistic designs are not eligible. The panel of jurors are:

  • Ms. Chris Hammer, Hellmuth, Obata, + Kassabaum, Inc., San Francisco
  • Mr. Bruce Plantz, editor FDM magazine
  • Mr. Peter O. Whitely, senior writer Sunset magazine

The Collins Companies operate three industrial forestlands that have been designated sustainable under Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards. Collin's hardwoods (ash, cherry, maple, beech, oak, etc.) originate from Kane Hardwood in Pennsylvania and softwoods (ponderosa pine, sugar pine, etc.) from Collins Pine Company in northern California. Certified plywood is supplied by States Industries, Oregon, in cherry, maple or red oak veneer.

The competition's aim is to encourage distinctive new furniture design in the following categories:

  • Home furnishings to be sold under $300
  • Home furnishings to be sold over $300
  • Office furniture
  • Children's Furniture
  • Deck and Patio furniture.
